Two major political rallies are scheduled for Saturday in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, featuring leaders from the ruling and opposition parties.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the National People’s Power (NPP) is set to address a farmers’ rally at Deepa Uyana in Polonnaruwa. The event marks two years of the current government in office.

Simultaneously, the opposition Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) will hold its ‘Janasatana’ rally at the Anuradhapura Municipal Council Grounds. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is expected to lead the gathering as the party seeks to rebuild its political momentum.

The SLPP rally occurs while party National Organiser Namal Rajapaksa remains in remand custody. He was arrested on September 4 by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) regarding an investigation into the procurement of wide-body aircraft for SriLankan Airlines.
