Sri Lanka pursues economic growth and legal accountability

Sri Lanka is undergoing significant political and economic shifts under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Two years into his term, the nation has seen a notable economic recovery following the catastrophic 2022 financial crisis. According to a July report from the World Bank, Sri Lanka has ascended to the category of “lower-middle-income” countries, with a nominal per capita income of approximately $5,003, surpassing the $4,636 threshold. Economic growth was reported at five percent in the previous year, with steady growth expected to continue.

Parallel to economic stabilization, the government is accelerating legal accountability measures. Authorities have indicated that procedural and bureaucratic hurdles are being cleared to intensify prosecutions of prominent figures from the former Rajapaksa-era administrations. This includes scrutiny of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, whose tenure was marked by the economic meltdown that led to widespread public unrest. These legal proceedings are viewed by many citizens as a critical test of the government’s commitment to justice and accountability regarding the policies that contributed to the country’s recent collapse.
