Sri Lanka ranks 120th in global minimum wage index

Sri Lanka has ranked 120th out of 130 countries in a global minimum wage index, placing it among the lowest-ranked economies for wage standards. The report, which utilizes 2024 data from the International Labour Organization, uses purchasing power parity (PPP) to adjust monthly wages, reflecting what workers can actually afford within their respective economies.

After PPP adjustments, Sri Lanka’s monthly minimum wage is estimated at approximately US$200. This figure places the nation below its South Asian neighbors, including Pakistan (68th at US$570), Nepal (78th at US$490), Bangladesh (89th at US$379), and India (111th at US$233).

The low ranking highlights the economic challenges facing Sri Lankan workers, particularly in the agriculture, garment, and informal sectors, as the country continues to recover from a severe economic crisis. Critics note that wage adjustments have struggled to keep pace with inflation and the rising cost of living.
