Sri Lanka reaffirms security commitment to India
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has reiterated that Sri Lanka will not allow its territory to be used for activities harmful to India's security interests. This assurance follows a positive development regarding Katchatheevu Island, where India’s Attorney General, R. Venkataramani, informed the Supreme Court that New Delhi has no intention of reopening the 1974 and 1976 maritime agreements.
While the legal challenges regarding these agreements remain pending with hearings scheduled for February 2027, the Indian government indicated that concerns involving Indian fishermen will continue to be addressed through diplomatic channels. The Sri Lankan government emphasized its commitment to maintaining trust and transparency to ensure regional stability in the Indian Ocean.
Simultaneously, India has emerged as Sri Lanka's second-largest export destination, displacing the United Kingdom, which has moved to third place. This shift reflects growing economic ties and regional trade momentum between the two neighbors.
