Sri Lanka targets high-value tourism with $200M World Bank loan

Sri Lanka is implementing several strategies to revitalize its tourism sector, which has seen over 1.5 million arrivals in the first eight months of 2026. Despite this volume, the government has revised its annual targets downward from 3 million to 2.7 million visitors and from $5 billion to $4.2 billion in revenue due to lower visitor spending and decreased economic yields.

To address these challenges, the World Bank is providing a $200 million concessional loan to develop the industry. An initial $77 million will fund the ‘Thrive Colombo’ project, aiming to transform the capital into a high-value destination by increasing visitor stay times and spending. Subsequent operations will focus on nature-based and marine tourism.

Additionally, the country is seeing increased engagement from the Japanese market. Recent arrivals include large groups of over 200 Japanese tourists and investors, signaling growing interest in Sri Lanka’s wellness, cultural, and hospitality sectors. The government is also launching a digital promotion program to support recovery during the upcoming travel seasons.
