Sri Lanka economy shows resilience with 4.2% growth, IMF reports
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) reports that Sri Lanka’s economy is showing resilience, recording 4.2% growth in the second quarter of 2026. This marks the eleventh consecutive quarter of economic expansion. Official reserves rose to US$6.9 billion by the end of August 2026, and the nation’s banking sector remains well-capitalized and profitable. However, the IMF warns of downside risks stemming from global oil price shocks, geopolitical tensions in West Asia, and the El Niño climate phenomenon. Headline inflation reached 8% year-on-year in August 2026, largely driven by rising energy costs.
Regarding long-term recovery, the IMF projects that Sri Lanka could regain access to international financial and capital markets by approximately 2027. To sustain this momentum, the IMF recommends implementing a medium-term revenue strategy, broadening the tax base, and maintaining prudent fiscal policies to rebuild external buffers.
Separately, research from the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) highlights the economic potential of the agribusiness sector. The agrifood sector accounts for 24.5% of Sri Lanka's GDP and 42% of its employment. The study suggests that expanding high-value food and beverage manufacturing could significantly boost economic output, as the sector generates $1.85 in overall economic output for every dollar of final demand.
