Sri Lanka seeks legal ways to repatriate former Central Bank Governor

Sri Lankan authorities are exploring alternative legal avenues to repatriate former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran, who is currently residing in Singapore. Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala revealed that Mahendran has reportedly become a Singaporean citizen and has changed his name to Harjan Alexander.

Mahendran was indicted in 2019 in connection with a controversial 2015 Treasury bond scandal. Allegations suggest his involvement in insider trading caused losses exceeding US$11 million to the state. While previous extradition requests were rejected by Singaporean authorities for failing to meet specific legal requirements, the current government maintains its commitment to bringing him to justice.

The Minister noted that while a significant legal obstacle currently prevents formal extradition, the government is consulting legal experts to identify other viable mechanisms to ensure Mahendran faces proceedings in Sri Lanka.
