Sri Lanka targets regional digital and fintech expansion

Sri Lanka is working to position itself as a regional digital and fintech hub through strategic expansion and high-level industry events. Conrad Dias, Vice Chairman of the Fintech Forum Sri Lanka and Chairman of LOLC Finance PLC, noted that the primary challenge for local fintech firms is market size rather than innovation. To achieve meaningful growth, he suggests local companies must look beyond the national population of 20 million and target larger regional markets, such as African nations that could offer access to approximately 200 million people.

The Fintech Forum is facilitating this transition by uniting banks, regulators, and technology firms to enhance industry collaboration. This effort is complemented by the upcoming Digital Summit Asia, which aims to showcase Sri Lanka’s digital economy potential. The summit is expected to focus on digital infrastructure, emerging technologies, and attracting international investment to bolster the nation’s IT and business process outsourcing sectors.
