Sri Lanka to launch $100 million ADB-backed social protection program

Sri Lanka is launching a $100 million social protection initiative funded by a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Titled the Macro-Recovery Sector Development Program for Promoting Resilience and Inclusive Economic Opportunities, the project is scheduled to run from November 2026 to October 2031.

The program aims to strengthen social safety nets and address economic vulnerabilities exacerbated by climate change. It will be implemented in several districts, including Kegalle, Matale, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Batticaloa, and Nuwara Eliya. Key components include entrepreneurship training, improved market access, and financial connectivity. Additionally, 30,000 households under the Aswesuma program will receive a seed capital grant of 200,000 rupees, distributed in two installments.

To support aging populations and care services, the initiative plans to introduce new regulations for care professionals and establish five day-care centers for senior citizens. The program is part of a broader strategy to stabilize essential services and rebuild public trust following the nation's recent economic crisis.
