Sri Lanka to recruit 23,000 graduates for national teaching service

Sri Lankan Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, has announced plans to recruit more than 23,000 new graduates into the national teaching service. Speaking at the ‘Guru Pratibha Prabha – 2026’ National Teacher and Principal Commendation Ceremony in Colombo, she emphasized the government's commitment to protecting the professional rights, dignity, and welfare of educators.

Despite current financial constraints, the Prime Minister stated that the government intends to raise teacher salaries and protect their professional status. To address administrative challenges and professional grievances, she announced the proposed establishment of a National Education Council.

Additionally, Dr. Amarasuriya noted that the ongoing five-pillar education reform initiative, which began at the Grade One level in 2026, will continue to evolve through active consultation with teachers. The ceremony also recognized exceptional educators and principals across all educational zones in Sri Lanka.
