Sri Lanka tourism faces European arrival dip amid Middle East flight disruptions
Sri Lanka is experiencing a decline in tourist arrivals from European markets due to flight disruptions across the Middle East. Because many European travelers rely on connecting flights through Gulf hubs such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Qatar to reach the island, regional air travel instability has made these transit routes less reliable.
Nalin Jayasundera, President of the Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO), noted that while the dip is affecting Western European markets, it does not reflect a lack of interest in Sri Lanka as a destination. He highlighted growth in the Asia Pacific market, specifically from Australia, and expects the European decline to be corrected by next winter.
The tourism sector, which is vital for the nation's economic recovery, relies heavily on high-spending European visitors. Industry stakeholders are monitoring the situation, noting that while accessibility remains high via carriers like Emirates, the current regional turbulence has impacted booking confidence.
