Sri Lanka train services disrupted following Cyclone Ditwah

The scenic train route between Kandy and Ella in Sri Lanka remains partially suspended due to damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025. Landslides and washouts have damaged the line, and repairs to the Kandy end of the route are currently underway.

As of 2026, the section from Kandy to Nanu Oya is suspended. Travelers wishing to experience the journey must drive or take a bus from Kandy to Nanu Oya, where the train service resumes. The Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla sections have been operational since July 2026. Full service on the entire line is not expected to be restored before early 2027.
