Sri Lanka universities face staffing and admission crisis
Sri Lanka’s higher education system is facing a deepening crisis characterized by severe staff shortages and delays in student admissions. Prime Minister and Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya has instructed university authorities to accelerate the recruitment of personnel for approved vacancies, including lecturers, professors, technical staff, and administrators. The staffing shortage has been exacerbated by the country’s economic crisis, which led to a significant migration of skilled academics seeking better-paid international positions.
Recent discussions between the government and the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) failed to reach a resolution. FUTA President Ruchika Fernando noted that despite previous proposals to expedite student admissions, the Prime Minister reported that such documents had not yet reached the Presidential Secretariat. FUTA officials expressed frustration over the lack of progress, warning that continued delays will further strain the university system and postpone student admissions for a considerable period.
