Sri Lanka vows to prevent return of civil war conditions

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath stated that the government is committed to preventing a return to the conditions that fueled the country’s decades-long civil war. He emphasized a firm rejection of racism and religious extremism in all forms, aiming instead to pursue national unity and reconciliation.

Herath noted that while the conflict between the government and Tamil separatists ended in 2009, the wounds of the war remain. He highlighted that since the election of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake two years ago, the administration has worked to strengthen national institutions to address outstanding issues and build a secure, inclusive, and united nation.

Additionally, the Foreign Minister touched upon Sri Lanka’s humanitarian history, citing the rescue of sailors from Iranian ships during past maritime conflicts as an example of the nation’s commitment to navigating international sensitivities and providing aid.
