Sri Lanka weather warning: Heavy rain and high winds expected
The Department of Meteorology has issued weather warnings for Sri Lanka, forecasting increased rainfall and potential heavy storms across several provinces. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is expected in parts of the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, specifically affecting the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.
In the Uva, Eastern, and Northern provinces, afternoon or evening thunderstorms are likely. High winds of 30–40 km/h are expected in the central highlands and North Central provinces, with potential lightning strikes during storms.
Maritime conditions are expected to be rough. Wind speeds in the sea areas from Matara to Batticaloa via Hambantota may reach 50–60 km/h. Fishermen and maritime workers are advised to exercise extreme caution due to a low-pressure area forming in the Andaman Sea, which may intensify and increase wind speeds in the Bay of Bengal.
