Sri Lanka weather warning: Heavy thundershowers and rainfall expected

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning for widespread afternoon thundershowers across much of Sri Lanka on Sunday, September 13, 2026. Atmospheric conditions are favorable for intense rainfall, with accumulations of up to 100 mm expected in certain locations.

Heavy rainfall is particularly likely in the North-central, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western, and North-western provinces. Such downpours may lead to flash flooding, reduced visibility, and hazardous road conditions. The public is advised to avoid unnecessary travel during peak shower periods and stay clear of flood-prone areas and rivers.

In maritime areas, showers may occur off the coasts from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle, as well as from Mullaittivu to Batticaloa via Trincomalee during the evening or night. South-westerly winds are expected at speeds of 30-40 kmph, potentially increasing to 50 kmph near Hambantota and Pottuvil. Sea conditions are expected to be rough, with wave heights reaching 2.0 to 3.0 meters in areas extending from Chilaw to Pottuvil.
