Sri Lankan doctors remove record-breaking 3.1kg bladder stone

Medical specialists at Trincomalee General Hospital in Sri Lanka have removed a 3.1kg bladder stone from a 55-year-old man. The stone, which measured between 14cm and 19cm in length, is described as being comparable in size to an ostrich egg and in weight to a full-term newborn baby.

The patient was originally admitted to the hospital following a stroke. During his treatment, doctors noted he was experiencing difficulty urinating, leading to the discovery of the stone. Dr. Prahalahan Balakrishnan, who led the surgical team, stated that the stone is believed to have been in the patient’s bladder for approximately five to ten years.

Medical officials believe the procedure may set a new record. The previous record held by Guinness World Records was a 1.9kg stone removed from a patient in Brazil in 2003. The patient is reported to be in good health and remains under medical supervision for his other conditions.
