Sri Lankan man jailed in UK for sexual assault on train
Nisan Fernando Kurukulasuriya, a 39-year-old Sri Lankan national, has been sentenced to eight months in prison by Manchester Crown Court following a conviction for sexual assault and outraging public decency.
The incident occurred on April 20, 2026, on a train traveling from Stoke to Manchester. Kurukulasuriya targeted a woman traveling alone, repeatedly assaulting her and exposing himself. After the assault, he fled the train but was subsequently arrested by British Transport Police near Manchester Piccadilly station.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which prohibits Kurukulasuriya from sitting next to women he does not know on public transport. He will also be placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years. The conviction may also lead to immigration consequences, including potential deportation proceedings upon the completion of his sentence.
