Sri Lankan MP claims President Dissanayake could face jail over fund mismanagement
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Prasad Siriwardana has alleged that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake could face imprisonment following the conclusion of his administration in 2030. The lawmaker accused the President of failing to ensure accountability regarding the mismanagement of public funds.
Specifically, Siriwardana cited a reported cyberattack on the Finance Ministry that resulted in a loss of $2.5 million in public funds. He argued that Dissanayake, who also serves as finance minister, should be held legally responsible for the loss due to a failure to act appropriately. The MP suggested that legal precedents regarding the misuse of state resources by former officials could apply to the current President.
These accusations come as the opposition increases pressure on the National People's Power (NPP) government. While Dissanayake rose to power on a platform of transparency and anti-corruption, the SJB contends that the administration has failed to meet its reform mandates and has engaged in conduct that warrants criminal scrutiny.
