Sri Lankan Navy and Indian authorities intercept illegal maritime activities
Authorities in India and Sri Lanka have intercepted separate maritime incidents involving unauthorized crossings and smuggling.
In one instance, Indian authorities detained four individuals, including three Sri Lankan nationals and a local boat operator, following an illegal attempt to enter India by sea. The incident occurred via maritime routes, likely through the Palk Strait region, and is currently under investigation by coastal security agencies.
In a separate operation, the Sri Lankan Navy arrested 11 individuals, including seven Indians from Tamil Nadu, for attempting to smuggle approximately 2,400 kilograms of beedi leaves. The group was intercepted off Udappuwa in Puttalam while attempting to transfer the consignment from Indian boats to Sri Lankan dinghies. The seized items and detainees have been handed over to the Customs Preventive Office in Colombo for legal proceedings.
