Sri Lankan President Dissanayake Questions Police Drug Valuation Methods

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake asked senior police officials to explain how they calculate the estimated street value of narcotics seized in anti‑drug operations. The questioning took place during a briefing on the nationwide "Ratama Ekata" anti‑narcotics campaign, focusing on the Galle District Special Coordination Committee meeting.

Police said the figures are based on prevailing street prices, which vary by location—for example, a 70‑80 mg heroin packet sells for about Rs 2,000 in Galle but differs elsewhere. They reported 2,607 raids in the district, seizing roughly 119 kg of drugs and placing over 100 major traffickers under asset investigations. The President called for transparent, evidence‑based valuation methods, warning that inflated estimates could mislead the public. Police have not yet issued a formal response outlining any changes to their methodology.
