Sri Lankan rupee trades near 330 to the US dollar
The Sri Lankan rupee is trading at approximately 330 to the US dollar, reflecting a complex balance between rising import costs and strengthening foreign exchange inflows. While the currency has seen slight appreciation against the dollar across several commercial banks, economic factors continue to influence its movement.
Key drivers of the exchange rate include the cost of essential imports such as fuel, medicine, and machinery, which are impacted by international oil prices and Middle East shipping disruptions. Conversely, the economy is supported by substantial foreign exchange from tourism, workers’ remittances, and official reserves, which reached approximately US$6.9 billion by the end of August.
As the economy normalizes, increasing demand for foreign currency to finance vehicle imports and business inputs is also a factor. Despite these pressures, the current economic position is significantly stronger than in 2022, when the country faced acute foreign currency shortages.
