Sri Lanka's Consumer Affairs Authority bans sale of non‑certified motorcycle helmets

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) of Sri Lanka has issued a notice warning that it is illegal to store, display, distribute or sell motorcycle helmets that do not bear the mandatory Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) Product Certification Mark. The requirement is set out in Gazette Extraordinary No. 1923/65 and conforms to SLS 517.

Traders are instructed to inspect existing inventory, verify supplier invoices and importer details, remove any helmets lacking the SLS mark, avoid selling helmets with removable stickers, and issue receipts for all sales. Claims of foreign certifications such as DOT, ECE or ISI, or that a helmet is a racing model, do not exempt sellers. The CAA warns that legal action will be taken against non‑compliant traders and ignorance of the law will not be accepted as a defence.
