Sri Lanka's southwest monsoon intensifies with heavy rain warning
Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology has issued a warning that the southwest monsoon will bring intensifying rainfall and strong winds to the island's southwestern provinces. Heavy falls of more than 100 mm are expected in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, with wind gusts of 40‑70 km/h and rough seas along the coast from Chilaw to Hambantota. Authorities have urged residents in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas to stay vigilant, secure property, avoid unnecessary travel and follow official updates. Fishermen and naval crews have been advised not to venture into the affected sea zones until further notice.
