Sriharjo Kitiran Festival Showcases Tradition and Boosts Local Economy

The Festival Kitiran Sriharjo was held on 25‑26 July 2026 in the Bulak Truli area of Sriharjo, Imogiri, Bantul, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Sixty‑three neighbourhoods displayed thousands of kitiran—small traditional windmills—across rice‑field terraces, aiming to preserve the folk game, promote the village as a tourist destination, and stimulate the local economy through UMKM and craft centres.

A unique 5 km run, Kitir‑Run, was added, with participants receiving colourful kitiran instead of medals. Organizer Alib Biyono explained that the kitiran symbolize the philosophy “urip kudu obah” – life must keep moving: “Selagi masih ada angin, kitiran terus akan berputar. Begitu juga dengan kita, selagi masih bisa bernafas, harus bergerak, hidup, dan menghidupi.” Lurah Titik Istiawatun Hasanah noted the festival supports the new Sriharjo Village Tourism project, stating “Desa Wisata Sriharjo akan memayungi destinasi wisata selain yang ada di Sri Keminut.”
