Srijit Mukherji to Direct Film on Satyajit Ray’s ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’
Award‑winning Indian filmmaker Srijit Mukherji is set to helm “Maharaja Tomare Selam,” a feature that dramatizes the making of Satyajit Ray’s 1969 classic “Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne.” The project, produced by Hoichoi Studios, Friends Communication and the original producer Piyali Films, will star Jeetu Kamal, Ritwik Bhowmik, Rudranil Ghosh, Satakshi Nandy, Sairity Banerjee and Arijit Dutta, with principal photography slated for January 2027.
The film will focus on Ray’s creative pressures and choices against the backdrop of a politically charged Kolkata, highlighting the social and political undertones that the original fantasy film carried. Ray’s celebrated oeuvre includes “Pather Panchali,” “Charulata,” and the “Goopy Bagha Byne” trilogy, for which he received an honorary Academy Award in 1992. “Maharaja Tomare Selam” joins recent Bengali cinema efforts such as Anik Dutta’s “Aparajito” and Kaushik Ganguly’s “Apur Panchali,” which also explored Ray’s legacy.
