SS Rajamouli's epic film Varanasi generates global buzz

Director S.S. Rajamouli’s upcoming film Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Malayalam actor‑director Prithviraj Sukumaran, is being billed as one of the most ambitious Indian productions ever. The globe‑trotting adventure is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on 7 April 2027 and is being made on a reported budget of roughly ₹1,200 crore.

Prithviraj described Rajamouli’s work ethic as unusually intense, noting that the director demanded 94 retakes for a single shot and rehearses scenes from early morning, treating each day “like a debut”. He also praised Rajamouli’s ability to instantly convey emotional tone and switch characters while directing.

During the trailer launch of Netflix’s first Telugu series, Netflix India’s VP of Content Monika Shergill hinted that the streaming giant may secure Varanasi’s OTT rights, saying “some things need to remain a surprise for the future”. If confirmed, the deal could extend the film’s reach beyond its theatrical run, amplifying its global profile after the success of Rajamouli’s earlier works on the platform.
