S.S. Rajamouli's epic film Varanasi slated for April 2027 worldwide release

Director S.S. Rajamouli is preparing his next large‑scale movie, Varanasi, which combines Indian mythology, folklore and science‑fiction elements such as time travel. The film stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Prithviraj Sukumaran and features Prakash Raj in a prominent role. Composer M.M. Keeravani provides the music and the project is financed by KL Narayana and S.S. Karthikeya.

Production updates indicate that the major spectacle and IMAX sequences have been completed, with smaller inter‑connecting scenes being filmed now. Principal photography is expected to wrap between September and October 2026, and post‑production will follow. Varanasi is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 7 April 2027.

The film’s first preview, titled Varanasi: To the World, was shown at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, where it received loud applause and generated strong online buzz. Rajamouli emphasized that, despite its grand visual scope, the story’s core is the emotional bond between a father and his son. He also confirmed that Varanasi will be a standalone film with no sequel.
