SS United States to become world's largest artificial reef in Florida

The historic SS United States ocean liner is scheduled to be sunk in the Gulf of Mexico to create the world's largest artificial reef. Okaloosa County officials have established a timeline for the deployment, targeting the second week of November 2026, though the exact date remains dependent on weather conditions.

The vessel, which measures approximately 305 meters (nearly 1,000 feet) in length, will be positioned roughly 22 nautical miles southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach. The project aims to bolster local tourism by providing a premier destination for scuba diving, recreational fishing, and marine enthusiasts.

Once the fastest passenger ocean liner, the SS United States set a transatlantic speed record during its 1952 maiden voyage. The ship is currently undergoing rehabilitation and preparation in Mobile, Alabama. To preserve its legacy, the SS United States Conservancy is planning a land-based museum near the diving excursion embarkation points, which will display significant artifacts such as the ship's iconic funnels, radar mast, and bow anchor.
