St. Andrew's United Church in Nanaimo faces ongoing vandalism and fires
St. Andrew’s United Church in Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter is facing ongoing property damage, including fires and vandalism. On September 10, a vacant house on the church property suffered significant damage from a fire.
Angie Jones, the church’s event coordinator and administrator, reported that the property experiences damage on an almost weekly basis. This includes the removal of boards from windows and doors, small fires being lit inside the vacant residence, and damage to the door of the church’s thrift shop. These incidents have resulted in thousands of dollars in repair and clean-up costs.
The heritage church, built in 1893, provides community programs, concerts, and food services for vulnerable people. Church staff expressed that the current situation is unsustainable due to the financial burden of repeated repairs.
