St. Charbel Trail pilgrimage promoted by American priest
American priest Father Michael Sliney, LC, is promoting the St. Charbel Trail in Lebanon, describing the 80.8-mile pilgrimage and hiking route as a “hidden gem.” After completing the trek, Sliney expressed a desire to encourage American Catholics, particularly Lebanese Americans, to experience the spiritual and natural landscapes of the region.
The trail, also known as Darb Mar Charbel, connects various monasteries, villages, and historic sites associated with the Maronite tradition. It is currently divided into two main sections: a northern route of approximately 50 miles starting in the Qadisha Valley, and a southern route of about 31 miles that begins at the Maronite Patriarchal See in Bkerke and ends at St. Charbel’s tomb in Annaya.
Sliney highlighted the peace and spiritual presence found within the landscape and noted the inspiration provided by the local monastic community. He also addressed perceptions of Lebanon, emphasizing his positive experience to counter views of the country as an unsafe destination.
