St. George’s Caye Day celebrations to feature parade and bicycle race

Belize is preparing for the annual September 10 celebrations, marking St. George’s Caye Day. The festivities in Belize City will feature an expanded Citizens’ Parade including marching bands, schools, churches, and government departments. A notable highlight of this year's event is the revival of the bicycle race and decorated bicycle competition, intended to encourage national pride and creativity among younger citizens.

Historically, St. George’s Caye served as a vital settlement and center of commerce for British Baymen engaged in the logwood trade. The island's name evolved from various Spanish designations, such as Cayo Casina or Cayo Cocina, to Saint George’s Key in the mid-1760s, likely honoring the patron saint of England. The island remains a significant symbol of Belizean history and identity.
