St. John's Community Health report links Boyle Heights fire to serious illnesses

A report from St. John's Community Health reveals significant health issues among residents following the Lineage Logistics warehouse fire in Boyle Heights this past June. Data collected from mobile clinics between June 17 and July 31 shows that approximately 36% of the 1,306 patients treated suffered from serious health problems attributed to smoke and toxic chemical exposure.

Specific medical conditions identified include acute upper respiratory infections, eye disorders, conjunctivitis, persistent coughs, and asthma exacerbations. The report further noted that 26.6% of patients were diagnosed with toxic smoke exposure, while 24.5% faced hazardous substance exposure.

Beyond physical ailments, the report highlighted a mental health toll. Dozens of patients were prescribed medication for anxiety and sleep issues stemming from environmental exposure, sleep disruption, housing instability, and psychosocial distress related to the fire and recovery efforts. Jim Mangia, president and CEO of St. John's Community Health, warned that such intensive environmental exposure can lead to long-term chronic health impacts.
