St. Joseph’s Health Care London cuts nursing roles amid deficit

St. Joseph’s Health Care London is cutting over 100 registered nurse positions within its mental health programs to address budget deficits. The hospital is removing 83 full-time and 31 part-time RN roles at the Parkwood Institute, while simultaneously adding roles for registered practical nurses, personal support workers, occupational therapists, and other specialized staff.

The restructuring follows a $4.7 million deficit recorded by the hospital last year and a projected operating deficit for the current year. The facility aims to achieve a balanced budget within three years through a revised service delivery model for its mental health inpatient, regional outpatient, and outreach programs.

Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones has directed all hospitals in the province facing deficits to implement three-year elimination plans. While the province has increased hospital funding by 4% for the fourth consecutive year, many Ontario hospitals continue to face financial challenges.
