St. Louis Cardinals defeat Cincinnati Reds after ninth-inning error

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Reds 10-9 following a dramatic ninth-inning collapse by the Reds. With two outs in the top of the ninth and the Reds leading 5-4, center fielder Dane Myers dropped a routine fly ball by JJ Wetherholt. This error allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score, making all subsequent runs in the inning unearned.

Reliever Brock Burke was charged with six unearned runs on two hits during the inning. According to OptaSTATS, Burke became the first pitcher in MLB history since earned runs began being tracked in 1913 to enter the ninth inning or later and allow at least six runs with zero earned runs and two or fewer hits.

The Reds attempted a rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring four runs to narrow the lead to one, but failed to score with the bases loaded after Matt McLain lined out to right field.
