St. Louis Cardinals evaluate bullpen performance and top prospects

The St. Louis Cardinals' bullpen experienced a significant decline in 2026, falling to 22nd in the league with a 4.46 ERA and tying for the third-most blown saves in baseball. This regression follows a period of stability in 2024 and 2025. The unit has become younger following the departure of veterans such as Ryan Helsley, JoJo Romero, Phil Maton, and Andrew Kittredge.

Gordon Graceffo emerged as a standout performer, earning an A- grade after posting a 2.67 ERA across 81 innings. His season was marked by a mid-year adjustment to a new slider grip, which helped reduce hard contact and resulted in a 1.65 ERA over his final 27.1 innings. Justin Bruihl also provided notable relief, earning a B+ grade.

On the prospect front, 22-year-old Tanner Franklin has gained attention as a potential future ace. Ranked as the team's No. 6 overall prospect, Franklin has been praised by Baseball America for possessing what may be the “best starter stuff” in the minor leagues, highlighted by a high-velocity cutter and elite fastball metrics.
