St. Louis Cardinals manager maintains faith in closer Riley O’Brien
St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol has expressed continued support for closer Riley O’Brien despite a volatile second half to his season. O’Brien, an All-Star who led the National League in saves earlier this year, has struggled recently, recording six instances of a loss, a blown save, or both in his last 11 outings.
Following a 10th-inning loss to the San Francisco Giants, where O’Brien surrendered a go-ahead home run, Marmol indicated that no change in the closer role is imminent. O’Brien currently holds 37 saves in 45 opportunities but leads all relievers with nine losses. Marmol emphasized that the decision to stick with O’Brien is a matter of mindset and professional growth, stating, “I don't have an issue running him out there and allowing him to figure it out.”
The Cardinals, currently 75-78, are nearing elimination from postseason contention and face the Washington Nationals in an upcoming three-game series.
