St. Louis Cardinals to promote prospect Leo Bernal

The St. Louis Cardinals are expected to promote catching prospect Leo Bernal from Triple-A Memphis to the Major League roster on Tuesday. The move coincides with the expansion of the active roster to 28 players on September 1, ahead of a series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bernal, a 22-year-old switch-hitter from Panama, has been a standout performer for the Memphis Redbirds this season. He has recorded 104 hits and 16 home runs with a .278 batting average and an .831 OPS. While primarily a catcher, Bernal has also seen time at first base, providing the Cardinals with positional flexibility.

Already on the 40-man roster, Bernal is highly regarded within the Cardinals organization. His promotion will likely involve roster adjustments among the team's catching corps, which includes Pedro Pages and Jimmy Crooks.
