St. Louis emergency services test drone technology for rapid response
Emergency services in St. Louis are expanding the use of drone technology to enhance situational awareness and response times. The St. Louis Fire Department is conducting a 30-day evaluation to determine how aerial data can support operations involving fires, hazardous materials, and rescue missions. Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson noted that drones often arrive at scenes before fire trucks, providing vital real-time information to responding units.
Simultaneously, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is preparing to launch its Drone as First Responder (DFR) program. This initiative, which received approval from the Board of Police Commissioners earlier this year, aims to deploy non-weaponized drones from automated docking stations throughout the city. The program is designed to provide officers with an aerial view of emergencies before patrol units arrive, assisting in decision-making during potentially dangerous incidents.
