St. Louis Lambert Airport eyes funding from Modern Skies Act
St. Louis Lambert International Airport may benefit from the proposed Modern Skies Act, a $30 billion federal aviation modernization package introduced by U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt. The legislation includes a $10 billion Aging Terminal Pilot Program designed to provide substantial federal assistance for the reconstruction or modernization of major passenger terminals at up to three medium-hub airports.
As Lambert moves forward with a multibillion-dollar redevelopment program to replace its aging terminals with a modern, consolidated facility, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently visited the airport to discuss potential eligibility for the program. While the proposal aims to improve capacity and encourage airline competition, the legislation has not yet passed Congress, and no funding has been awarded.
In a separate effort to boost regional connectivity and economic growth, St. Louis is collaborating with cities like Seattle to expand direct flight routes and launch tourism campaigns. These initiatives aim to transform regional aviation networks into drivers for local commerce and hospitality revenue.
