St. Louis prosecutors decline charges in fatal police shooting

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office has announced it will not file criminal charges against a police officer involved in the 2024 fatal shooting of 17-year-old Emeshyon Wilkins. Prosecutors concluded they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the officer’s use of deadly force was objectively unreasonable.

The decision follows an investigation into an encounter involving plainclothes officers from the Anti-Crime Task Force and a stolen vehicle. Authorities noted that initial public statements from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) regarding the incident were inaccurate, specifically regarding whether Wilkins pointed a firearm at the officer. The SLMPD has since updated its procedures for releasing information following officer-involved shootings.

While the criminal review is resolved, the SLMPD Internal Affairs Division will conduct an administrative review to check for policy compliance, and civil litigation filed by the Wilkins family remains pending in federal court.
