St. Louis surgeons perform world's first robotic liver and kidney transplant

Surgeons at WashU Medicine and the Barnes-Jewish Transplant Center have performed the world's first robotic combined liver and kidney transplant. The procedure was conducted by surgeons Adeel Khan and Jessica Lindemann on Darrell Bosworth, a patient suffering from cirrhosis and renal failure.

Unlike conventional double transplants that require incisions of 16 to 20 inches, this robotic-assisted procedure utilized a single incision of approximately 7.5 centimeters (three inches). The liver transplant was performed first in an eight-hour operation, followed by the kidney transplant the next day using the same incision site.

The surgical team noted that the smaller incision is critical for fragile patients, as it minimizes abdominal muscle damage, reduces pain, and can accelerate recovery. The patient reported minimal pain and began showing signs of mental clarity and physical improvement within days of the operation.
