St. Mark's Square restoration concludes in Venice
The restoration and consolidation of the paving in St. Mark's Square and Piazzetta in Venice has officially concluded. The technical intervention, aimed at repairing damage caused by the exceptional tidal flooding (Acqua Granda) of 2019, was formally certified following the signing of the testing certificate by the Municipality of Venice and the involved companies.
The project involved the restoration of nearly 5,000 square meters of trachyte masegni stones and Istrian stone strips. The works addressed issues where flooding had washed away the sand sub-base, causing structural instability. The project also included interventions on the bases of the columns of Marco and Todaro and protections for flagpole pillars.
Public Works Assessor Riccardo Brunello described the project as particularly complex due to the need to manage work in a high-traffic monumental site while minimizing disruption to residents, tourists, and local businesses. The construction phase concluded on March 27 with the placement of the final restored stone. While this specific phase is complete, broader efforts to secure the Marciana area and its banks are ongoing.
