St. Martin Parish Sheriff credits Flock cameras with solving crimes

St. Martin Parish Sheriff Becket Breaux stated that approximately 15 Flock Safety cameras deployed in the parish have assisted law enforcement in solving numerous crimes. The automated license plate readers capture vehicle details and license plates, functioning similarly to the National Crime Information Center database used to check criminal histories.

To address privacy concerns, Breaux noted that deputies must have a case number and a documented reason before searching for specific plates. However, the use of these cameras has faced growing pushback in Louisiana, including discussions regarding a potential statewide ban. Local debate has also centered on oversight and data retention, particularly following Flock Safety’s announcement to lower its recommended default footage retention window from 30 days to seven days.
