Trnova Petka: Orthodox Christians celebrate feast of Saint Paraskeva
Orthodox Christians are celebrating the feast day of Saint Paraskeva of Rome, widely known in Balkan folk traditions as Trnova Petka or Summer Saint Petka, observed on August 8.
According to religious history, Saint Paraskeva was a 2nd-century Roman Christian who distributed her wealth to the poor and was martyred for her faith. The holiday marks the end of a small summer cycle of female-centered religious holidays.
Deeply rooted in folk tradition, particularly among women, the day is associated with specific customs to ensure household peace and health. Many believe that women should avoid heavy domestic chores—such as sewing, kneading bread, or washing laundry—to prevent their hands from becoming numb or painful during the year. Other traditions include decorating homes with fresh flowers, wearing new clothing, and using incense to purify the household.
