St. Paul City Council proposes new homelessness response strategy
The St. Paul City Council is considering a resolution to implement a “coordinated response” to unsheltered homelessness. The proposal follows the closure of major encampments, such as Pig’s Eye Park, which led to residents relocating to new sites.
The proposed three-part plan includes a 60-day period featuring a “navigation tent” led by service providers at encampment sites before any closures occur, unless an immediate threat to life or safety is identified. Additionally, the resolution calls for a temporary low-barrier shelter in an indoor space for six months during the winter, and the eventual development of a permanent low-barrier shelter utilizing a tiny-home model.
Six of the seven council members are sponsoring the resolution, which aims to provide more suitable resources for residents. A vote on the matter is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 21.
