St. Paul man arrested after shooting at Ramsey County deputy
A 25-year-old St. Paul man, identified as Dmonte Shavezz Leanna, is in custody following an attempted shooting of a Ramsey County sheriff’s deputy in Maplewood, Minnesota.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m. near the intersection of Rice Street and Roselawn Avenue West. According to the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy and a K-9 partner were responding to a call when they observed what appeared to be a road rage incident involving a Buick LeSabre. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the driver performed a sudden U-turn and fired a handgun at the deputy from point-blank range. The bullet struck the hood of the squad car and ricocheted into the windshield. No injuries were reported.
The suspect fled the scene in a second vehicle, discarding a handgun during the pursuit. Following a coordinated effort involving the Minnesota State Patrol, the St. Paul Police Department, and the Maplewood Police Department—aided by a State Patrol helicopter—the suspect and a second individual were apprehended in Minneapolis. Leanna was booked into the Ramsey County Jail on Tuesday night.
