St. Paul's Cathedral faces backlash over nightclub partnership

St. Paul’s Cathedral in London is facing significant criticism following a multi-year agreement with the London nightclub Fabric to host contemporary music events within the historic site. The partnership grants Fabric exclusive rights to stage concerts at the cathedral from 2026 through 2030, with the first event scheduled for October 29.

Critics, including members of the Nelson Society, have condemned the deal, arguing it disrespects the sanctity of the consecrated space. Descendants of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, who is buried in the cathedral’s crypt, have described the arrangement as “an insult to Lord Nelson's memory” and a reflection of declining spiritual integrity.

In response to concerns regarding the proximity of events to the tombs, cathedral officials stated that the concerts will be seated events and that attendees will not be permitted to enter the crypt. Sandra Lynes Timbrell, the cathedral’s director of visitor engagement, noted that the program is intended to encourage people to experience the building “in new and exciting ways.”
