St. Paul's Cathedral partners with Fabric nightclub for concert series

St. Paul’s Cathedral in London has entered a multi-year partnership with the nightclub Fabric to host concerts and DJ sets within the historic building through 2030. The cathedral's director of visitor engagement, Sandra Lynes Timbrell, stated the goal is to help visitors “discover and engage with this historic building in new and exciting ways” by showcasing world-class talent in an iconic space.

The decision has drawn significant backlash from religious groups and historic preservationists. Critics argue the arrangement disrespects the cathedral's role as a major center of Anglican worship. Additionally, the Nelson Society has criticized the move, describing it as “an insult to Lord Nelson's memory” due to the proximity of the musical events to the crypt where Lord Nelson is buried.

Fabric, the nightclub group involved in the agreement, has its own history of controversy, having lost its license in 2016 following two drug-related deaths on its premises. Fabric co-founder Cameron Leslie described the partnership as “an extraordinary and unexpected coming together of two very different parts of London.” The first scheduled event is set for late October, though the performer has not yet been announced.
