St. Petersburg car bomb kills Russian military officer
A car bomb explosion in the Slavyanka district of St. Petersburg killed a high-ranking Russian military officer on Thursday morning. The victim has been identified by several media outlets as Lieutenant Colonel Sergej Sečkov, a pilot serving in the Russian Aerospace Forces. The explosion occurred in a residential area near a supermarket as the driver was starting his Geely vehicle.
The officer's wife, who was also in the car, survived the blast but sustained critical injuries, including reported traumatic amputations of her legs. She is currently in intensive care. The blast was powerful enough to scatter debris dozens of meters from the scene and damage nearby parked vehicles.
The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case into the incident. While official authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the deceased, local reports suggest the attack may have been an assassination. This incident follows a pattern of attacks targeting high-level Russian military personnel and officials since the start of the conflict in Ukraine. Some reports suggest a 24-year-old woman may have been involved in planting the device before traveling through Turkey and Moldova.
